The country’s daughters are assured on Friday by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. As soon as the Committee concerned gave its report, the government would determine the right marriage age for daughters, said PM Modi. During the event to launch a commemorative coin of 75 denomination marking the 75th anniversary.
Prime Minister Modi said, Without any discussion of the correct marriage age. The daughters are now in a state of the discussion. They have written to me from all over the country asking why the committee concerned has not yet made its decision. I can assure you that once the report comes the government will act on it.
He also addressed his government’s measures in ensuring women’s health and hygiene. “We take adequate steps to ensure the well-being of our daughters. Through Jal Jeevan mission, we are working to supply water for all households.
Some works are done by the government
On 22 September the central government said it had formed a task force to investigate the connexion of marriage and maternity age. “A task force was formed to evaluate marital and maternal age associations with I mother and neonate/infant/child health, medical well-being, and nutritional status, during pregnancy, and afterwards, (ii) key parameters such as child mortality rate, Maternal Mortality rate, total fertility rate, the birth rate of sex, child sex ratio, and (iii) any other acceptable labelling ratio. Mr Gupta asked if it is a fact that the government re-examines the legal women’s marriage age, which is now 18.
The current right marriage age for daughters
At the moment the minimum age for girls to marry was 18, while the minimum age for boys was 21. Different women’s centre and right activists have requested to increase girls’ minimum age to marry. It will help girls to complete their higher education before they are married. Many have indicated the gap between the girls and boys in the minimum age. Many have requested parity between girls and boys in the minimum age of marriage. ‘The daughters have written to me from across the world asking why the committee concerned has not yet agreed.
